Fri 03:00 PM USD Index of Consumer Sentiment
What happened lately
In May 2025, economic data from the United States showed mixed signals. The Producer Price Index (PPI) increased by 0.1%, a slight recovery after a 0.5% decrease in April. Furthermore, the PPI excluding food and energy sectors improved to 0.1% from a -0.2% revised figure in the previous month. On a yearly basis, the PPI for May showed a slight decline to 2.6% compared to a revised 2.5% in April. The 12-month PPI excluding food and energy sectors also decreased to 3% from a revised 3.2%. Additionally, the U.S. Monthly Treasury Budget Statement for May showed a deficit of -$316, a substantial drop from the $258 surplus recorded in April. In terms of consumer prices, the overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) for May rose to 2.4% from 2.3% in April. However, the month-over-month CPI increased by only 0.1%, down from 0.2% in April. The CPI excluding food and energy remained stable at 2.8% over the year, with a monthly measure decreasing to 0.1% from 0.2% the previous month.
The mixed economic data from the U.S. suggests cautious sentiment among investors. With the Producer Price Index showing slight improvements and consumer inflation remaining relatively stable, the market anticipates the U.S. Federal Reserve’s outlook on inflation and interest rate decisions. The unchanged initial unemployment claims provide a neutral indicator of the labor market’s health. The drop in the Treasury Budget Statement indicates potential fiscal challenges ahead. Meanwhile, the New Zealand dollar strengthened, with the NZDUSD pair rising by 0.64% to 0.60655, indicating that the strength of the NZD was enhancing relative to the USD. Given the upcoming release of the U.S. Consumer Sentiment Index, which could have high impact, the NZDUSD is likely to remain volatile. Should the sentiment index show strong numbers, it could strengthen the U.S. dollar, potentially halting or reversing recent NZD gains. Conversely, disappointing sentiment data might support further NZD appreciation against the USD.
