Thu 08:30 AM CHF SNB Interest Rate Decision (Policy Rate)
What happened lately
In the United States, several developments have recently been observed in various economic indicators. The Federal Reserve’s interest rate projections for the second year have increased to 3.4% from the previous 3.1%, while the first-year projections have also risen to 3.6%, though below forecasts. Notably, the interest rate projection for the long term remains unchanged at 3.9%, and the Federal Funds Rate stands steady at 4.5%. Concurrently, the U.S. labor market showed slight improvement as the initial unemployment claims decreased to 245K from a revised figure of 250K. However, the housing sector displayed some contraction, with building permits and housing starts both experiencing declines in May 2025. Building permits fell to 1.393 million and housing starts dropped to 1.256 million. Furthermore, industrial production decreased by 0.2% in May, following a stagnant rate in the previous month.
Retail trade figures also reflected some declines, with the overall monthly retail trade decreasing significantly by 0.9% as compared to the -0.1% from the earlier month, reflecting a downturn from the previous positive initial reports of 0.1%. The retail trade control group, however, showed some resilience, increasing to 0.4% in May from a revised -0.1% in April. Excluding automobiles, the retail trade also saw a reduction from 0.1% to -0.3% in May. These contradictory signals in retail trade metrics suggest nuanced consumer behavior and varying economic activities during this period.
As the USDCHF pair rose by 0.24% to 0.81781 on Wednesday, the market remains sensitive to these variations in economic data. With the upcoming Swiss National Bank (SNB) interest rate decision on the horizon, the CHF might experience fluctuations depending on any potential policy changes. If the SNB decides to adjust its policy rate, this could affect the relative strength of the CHF, potentially influencing the USDCHF further, either by reinforcing the current upward trend or causing a reversal. For now, the relatively unchanged U.S. interest rate landscape and contrasting economic indicators are contributing to a carefully balanced USDCHF exchange rate dynamic.
