What happened lately

In the United Kingdom, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data remained constant in the first quarter of 2025, with the annual GDP registering at 1.3%, consistent with the previous quarter’s report. This indicates a period of stability in the U.K.’s economic growth rate as reported by the Office for National Statistics. Similarly, the GDP over the three-month period also remained unchanged at 0.7% compared to the previous quarter, suggesting a plateau in the short-term economic activity.

The GBP/USD currency pair experienced a slight increase on Monday, rising by 0.1% to reach 1.37268. Over the course of June, the pair edged up by 0.03%, demonstrating marginal upward pressure and entering a phase of consolidation. Such movements typically suggest a balancing of trader expectations and market conditions.

Looking ahead, the currency market anticipates significant events that could impact the GBP/USD exchange rate. Notably, the Bank of England’s Governor Andrew Bailey’s speech is scheduled, which is likely to provide insight into the central bank’s monetary policy outlook and economic assessment. Concurrently, the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s address could offer indications regarding the U.S. monetary policy stance. Both events are crucial as they have the potential to influence investor sentiment and subsequently affect the GBP/USD dynamics. Depending on the hawkish or dovish tones of these speeches, the pair could experience volatility, potentially breaking from its consolidation if new economic policies or shifts in interest rate expectations are implied.
